this paper examines how natural disasters reshape county-level economic landscapes by analyzing foot traffic to local businesses. perhaps surprisingly, there is little change in total foot traffic after disasters at the monthly level. however, publicly traded companies are able to capture a larger share of foot traffic after disasters, especially in the retail sector where foot traffic closely tracks sales. this cannot be explained by business size alone, but it is related to firms’ cost of capital and geographic footprint. the counties seeing the greatest shift from small businesses to large public businesses are those with smaller, predominantly minority populations. dollar stores, which are known to target these areas, see a sharp increase in foot traffic share that endures postdisaster, a trend mirrored in their stock performance. overall, these findings reveal how certain business models benefit from disruptions in disaster-stricken communities.

jue ren博士，现任美国德克萨斯克里斯汀大学（tcu）尼利商学院经济学与金融学副教授，并担任中国留美经济学会（ces）董事。ren博士本科毕业于威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校，随后在埃默里大学获得经济学硕士及博士学位。她同时拥有特许金融分析师（cfa）和金融风险管理师（frm）专业认证。她的核心研究领域涵盖资产管理、金融中介、公司金融以及货币经济学等。其研究成果丰硕，多篇论文发表于american economic review、journal of finance、journal of financial and quantitative analysis、management science、journal of business & economic statistics等国际顶尖经济与金融学期刊。
